The Feastday of the Transfiguration of Christ
When Thou, O Christ our God, wast transfigured on the mountain, Thou didst reveal Thy glory to Thy disciples in proportion as they could bear it. Let Thine everlasting Light also enlighten us sinners, through the intercessions of the Theotokos; O Thou Giver of Life, glory to Thee.
Gospel Reading of the Festal Liturgy: Matthew 17: 1-9
The Icon:
Christ-the central figure. He is clothed white and completely surrounded by an aureole (elongated halo) to indicate the brilliant Light of Divinity which shown from Him.
Saint Elias the Prophet-the figure on the left.
Saint Moses the Lawgiver-the figure on the right; he holds in his hands the 10 commandments which he received on Mount Sinai.
The Disciples Peter, James and John-the three figures shown below Christ; they are portrayed in an attitude of being overcome by the Uncreated Light of Divinity.
Here's a coloring sheet for your little one to enjoy today! Kalo Paradiso to you all on this great feast! We'll be celebrating the Dormition of the Theotokos before we know it! Glory to God for all things!
We usually color this first and then cut around Christ and the Prophets and glue a piece of midnight blue construction paper behind it. Then we take glitter markers or anything sparkly and decorate the aureole. Have fun! If your kids color this or make another craft today e-mail it to me to post on PB & J Kids!
