Lucia, Saint of Light

Yesterday, for the first time, we celebrated the feast of the Virgin-martyr Lucia. I never knew much about this pre-schism saint until I read Katherine Bolger Hyde's new children's book, Lucia: Saint of Light.

Lucia: Saint of Light is a beautifully told story, with charming and detailed illustrations by Daria Fisher, about the traditions surrounding the feast of St. Lucia. Children will learn why girls wear white dresses with a red sash and a crown of candles upon their heads. Boys will be delighted to learn that they too can participate by wearing star-boy helmets and carrying star poles. What child wouldn't love that?

As if that weren't enough fun, the book also includes a song to St. Lucia and a recipe for Lussekatter, or Lucia Cat buns), which are sweet buns baked into the shape of a cross.

This book beautifully weaves together the life of St. Lucia with the traditional activities of the holiday. The story encourages children to visit those less fortunate and to share the joy of Christ with everyone, a lesson we all need reminded of.
