Road Trip Activities

I mentioned in a previous post that I made some Orthodox Saints activity binders for the kids to take with us on our upcoming road trip. Well, I decided to combine them with some other road trip activities for our trip. So, what I did was I took each of their Saints of North America pages and turned them into a huge binder full of lots of different activities. When we get back home, I'll make it back into it's own like the Saints in Times of Trouble binders but for now I thought this was a good way to incorporate everything into one place.Along with this fun travel activity that I made a couple of years ago, I found a ton of other great ideas via Pinterest. (You can check out my boards here.)The first thing I did was print these awesome car bucks and travel tokens (from Prepared Not Scared blog--genius!) onto card stock and cut them out. You'll need a 1 1/2" round hole punch for the tokens, if you don't want to cut each one individually with scissors. I have been slowly picking up fun little toys and treats from the dollar section at Target and will put them all in a bin in the front seat. The boys have been doing extra chores for "money" to be able to buy the treats. If they are good through an entire state they get a dollar for each hour it took us to get through that particular state. They also have the option of trading in a maximum of ten car bucks for real dollars when we get to Ohio and Tennessee. I set up a price sheet and printed it out and placed it in the front of their binders. (See photo below)I found these awesome "Road Trip Survival Kit" tags that you staple to the top of treat bags. There are two sizes to fit gallon and sandwich sized Ziploc bags. I'm going to fill them with white-trash popcorn and homemade granola bars.This Memory Game from Melissa & Doug is also great. I bought from Barnes & Noble yesterday and they've been begging to play with it ever since we brought it home. It was $12.99 but if you sign up for their Kid's Club, you get a 30% off coupon, so that saves you about four bucks.We'll also be listening to this CD for a good portion of the drive. We all love it and the boys have learned so many troparia for different saints and feastdays, not to mention they get to hear a little tidbit of why we celebrate those days.
