holy orthodox mothers series {part 2 - st. emmelia, mother of st. basil the great}
One of the things I find beneficial to my struggle as an Orthodox mom is reading the lives of holy Orthodox mothers. Their faith and example give me the strength I need to continue moving forward in my attempt to raise good Orthodox Christian children and to keep fighting my own spiritual battles.So many times when reading the lives of the saints we hear of their pious parents, most commonly their mothers. That’s the part where I let out a deep breath, when my mistakes and passions show their ugly faces all at once and I have no choice but to admit the mistakes I am making in my own child rearing. Yet somehow by the end of those stories my strength is renewed and I make the choice to forget the mistakes I’ve made and push forward in a better attempt at getting it right from that moment on.The stories that particularly strengthen me are those of real Orthodox moms. Mothers who have run their race and finished successfully. Mothers who have not only secured sainthood for themselves but for their children.I am constantly venting to and begging the Theotokos for her help and prayers, but there are several other holy mothers that I like to entreat as well. So for those of you who could use a little encouragement to continue trying to raise good Orthodox children in a world gone wrong, I’m sharing some of my favorite stories with you in a series of posts. So be sure to check back in to read the next one!May these precious and holy mothers intercede to God for us and our children!
St. Emilia, Mother of Sts. Basil and Gregory

The holy and righteous Emilia (also Emily or Emmelia), is the mother of Saint Basil the Great and several other children who are saints of the Church.
